Top 5 Components of Miscanthus Plantation Payback

A hectare of miscanthus pays for itself somewhere between the fifth and the tenth year. The exact year depends on five components, and each one can be worked out before you buy a single rhizome.
• cost of establishing a hectare (UAH 200,000 to 220,000 at 2026 season prices);
• yield by year (around 8 t/ha in the first year, a steady 15 t/ha from the fourth);
• harvesting and delivery costs (these depend on your machinery and the distance to the buyer);
• how the crop is sold (as raw material, as pellets or as your own fuel);
• miscanthus price per tonne (it decides whether a hectare pays back in year five or year ten).
Why miscanthus investment is hard to assess
The usual arable logic does not apply here. Wheat is sown in autumn and sold in summer, and by then you know whether it made money. Miscanthus is planted once. For the first three years the crop is smaller than it will be later, so you invest today and see a steady return in the fourth season.
Figures found online do not clear things up. Some count payback from the first harvest, some from the fourth, and others apply British trial results to Ukrainian fields. There are hardly any open prices for a tonne of bales or chopped miscanthus. The result is three articles with three different timescales, and none of them is about your land.
Miscanthus profitability is more reliably worked out yourself. To do that, payback is broken down into five components, and each one is checked separately.
1. Cost of establishing a hectare
The calculation assumes 20,000 rhizomes per hectare. For your field the rate may differ, up to 22,000, because it is set by an audit of soil, rainfall and terrain. At 2026 season prices including VAT, a hectare is made up of three items.
• Terravesta Athena rhizomes, 20,000 at UAH 9 each, UAH 180,000 in total;
• planter hire, UAH 4,000 per hectare provided the rhizomes are bought;
• soil preparation and other work, which bring a hectare to UAH 200,000 to 220,000, according to an estimate given in an interview with Ekonomichna Pravda (September 2026).
The calculation in point five starts from the lower figure, UAH 200,000. Divided by the rhizomes planted, that comes to UAH 10 each, work included. Spread over twenty years of the plantation's life, it is UAH 10,000 per hectare per year. Current prices are on the Terravesta Athena rhizome price page.
2. Yield by year
The yield builds up gradually. The first year gives around 8 t/ha, and from the fourth the plantation holds at 15 t/ha and keeps producing for more than twenty years.
Income from the first three harvests is left out of the payback calculation altogether. That is a safety margin. If you sell those harvests, the hectare pays back sooner than the table shows.
3. Harvesting and delivery costs
This component is not in the table, because it is different for every farm. Mowing, baling and haulage depend on your machinery and the distance to the buyer.
Miscanthus is harvested with standard farm machinery in winter or spring, so it does not clash with the harvest of other crops. According to Ekonomichna Pravda, if the crop has to travel more than 30 km it is baled, and for processing closer by it is chopped and carried in trailers. These costs for a specific site are added by an extended feasibility study for a miscanthus plantation.
4. How the crop is sold
The price of a tonne depends on the form in which miscanthus leaves the field. There are three options.
• Raw material. Bales or chopped material straight from the field. The lowest investment, but also the cheapest tonne.
• Pellets and briquettes. A production line is needed, but a tonne sells for considerably more. For reference, premium wood pellets cost around UAH 7,800 per tonne in August 2026. A tonne of miscanthus pellets in the EU costs around €330, according to Ekonomichna Pravda.
• Your own fuel. Pellets or bales fire a grain dryer or a boiler house instead of gas and diesel. The tonne is then not sold but saves the money that would otherwise go on energy.
How much it saves shows in the energy equivalent. According to the Institute of Bioenergy Crops and Sugar Beet, a tonne of dry miscanthus gives as much energy as 515 m³ of natural gas. A hectare yielding 15 t replaces around 7,700 m³ of gas every year.
Demand still exceeds supply, Ekonomichna Pravda reports. Farmers are switching grain dryers from diesel and gas to pellets. Miscanthus goes abroad only as pellets, because raw material has to be heat treated for export. The largest buyer is Poland, where the state supports the switch to pellet heating. In Ukraine, buyers take pellets, bales and chopped material straight from the field.
5. Miscanthus price per tonne
This is the main variable. Once the cost of a hectare and the yield are known, the payback year depends almost entirely on it. That is why the table reduces the economics of growing miscanthus to the price per tonne. Everything else stays fixed. An investment of UAH 200,000, a yield of 15 t/ha from the fourth year, and neither the first three harvests nor harvesting costs counted.
Price per tonne | Income per hectare per year | Payback year |
UAH 2,000 | UAH 30,000 | tenth |
UAH 3,000 | UAH 45,000 | eighth |
UAH 5,000 | UAH 75,000 | sixth |
UAH 7,000 | UAH 105,000 | fifth |
Find the row with the price a buyer near you will actually pay. If it is UAH 5,000 per tonne, the hectare repays the investment in the sixth year. After that, the plantation earns for another fourteen seasons without replanting. Each winter or spring it is mown, baled and sold.
How a community calculates payback
A community does the sums differently. In autumn 2025, the Teofipol community in Khmelnytskyi region planted 160,000 giant miscanthus rhizomes on eight hectares, or 20,000 per hectare. Local media describe it as the first municipal miscanthus plantation in Ukraine.
The second phase costs €140,000. The planting is being expanded to 24 hectares, and a die for pressing pellets is being bought, with the pellets going to heat municipal buildings. The project is funded by the Embassy of Slovenia in Ukraine under the Slovenia Aid & Partnership programme.
The community measures the result in tonnes of its own fuel for boiler houses and in restored soil near the wastewater treatment facilities. More on how this works in the Teofipol community case study.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to plant a hectare of miscanthus?
UAH 200,000 to 220,000 at 2026 season prices. Rhizomes make up the largest share, 20,000 at UAH 9 each, which is UAH 180,000. The exact rate for your site is set by an audit.
How many years does a miscanthus plantation take to pay back?
Between the fifth and the tenth year, depending on the price per tonne. The calculation includes the establishment investment and the harvests from the fourth year on. Harvesting costs are calculated separately.
Which pays better, selling raw material or making pellets?
Pellets sell for more, but they need a production line and buyers. Raw material requires no extra investment. Which pays better for you depends on your budget and the distance to buyers.
Does the table include harvesting and delivery?
No. Mowing, baling and haulage depend on machinery and the distance to the buyer, so they are calculated in a feasibility study for the specific site.
