Miscanthus growing technology from field to harvest

Miscanthus is planted once and harvested for twenty years in a row. Because of that, almost every decision that determines a plantation's productivity is made before the third year — after that, fixing mistakes gets expensive. Below is the sequence of operations, proven on our own fields in Zhytomyr region with the Terravesta Athena variety.



What this crop is and where it grows

Giant miscanthus (Miscanthus × giganteus) is a perennial grass with C4 photosynthesis — the same type as maize. Its root system reaches 2.5 metres, so the crop anchors slopes and plays a soil-protecting role on eroded land.


The crop is undemanding when it comes to soil. Only heavily waterlogged, strongly acidic and saline sites are unsuitable. On the contrary, sandy, peat and degraded land, where arable farming brings no profit, is exactly the target for miscanthus.


How to choose a site for miscanthus

A plantation is established for the long term, so the field is assessed against three parameters: water supply, soil type and biomass haulage logistics. The crop performs best where annual rainfall is 600–650 mm: in Kyiv region under such conditions up to 26 t/ha of dry matter was recorded at a harvest moisture of 13–14%. In the south the potential is lower, but the plantation remains profitable.


A separate argument is land unfit for commercial crop production. Eroded slopes, sands, peatlands and technogenically contaminated sites start earning under miscanthus, while the powerful root system holds back erosion at the same time.


Soil preparation for miscanthus

Work begins a year before establishment. There are no herbicides registered for the crop, so weeds are cleared out before planting:

  • disking immediately after harvesting the preceding crop;

  • provoking a weed flush and disking again;

  • deep ploughing with fertiliser application;

  • in spring — harrowing weeds at the white-thread stage.

On poor soils a compound fertiliser is applied with the primary cultivation. On our sandy and peat fields this was 200 kg/ha of YaraMila 18-18-18 and 100 kg/ha of urea.


Planting dates, depth and density

The planting window is roughly a month and a half, from mid-April to the end of May. Early planting pays off: the rhizome has time to use the spring moisture.

Planting depth is 8–10 cm, and pre-planting cultivation goes to the same depth. Density is 20,000–22,000 rhizomes per hectare on a roughly 70×70 cm pattern; the exact rate is set by a site audit.

Material quality matters no less than the rate. A rhizome fit for planting has 5–6 growth buds: the speed of regrowth and the vegetative mass of the first season depend on how many there are.


The first year decides everything

All fertilising and crop protection work is done in the first year. In Ukraine, miscanthus has practically no diseases or pests that reach an economic threshold. There are two real threats: weeds and soil pests, primarily cockchafer grubs and wireworms.


The main practice is mechanical inter-row weeding to 8–10 cm with earthing-up of the plants. It is used for the first two seasons, until the rows close over. If needed, nitrogen is applied at the same time at up to 60 kg/ha.


From the third year the plantation needs almost no inputs: fertiliser once every five years is enough, plus organic matter at up to 20 t/ha at the end of winter.


Yield by year

The first year gives 3–4 t/ha of dry biomass, and it is often not harvested at all. On our mother plantation the start was stronger — 8 t/ha. The second year reaches 10–15 t/ha. From the fourth year the yield stabilises at around 20 t/ha.


The Terravesta Athena variety yields up to 50% more than wild giganteus, has a higher calorific value and lower ash content, and delivers its first commercial harvest a year earlier — already in the second year.

For reference: one tonne of dry matter is equivalent to roughly 515 m³ of natural gas or 620 kg of coal.


Biomass harvesting

Miscanthus is harvested in winter or early spring, finishing by the end of March, before new shoots come through in April. Autumn harvesting is possible, but such biomass contains more ash-forming elements and fuel quality drops. Spring harvesting also saves on additional drying: moisture at that point is 13–14%.

There are two technologies. The first is chipping for granulators, for pellets and briquettes. The second is baling with a round/square baler: bales are easier to transport, store and burn. A forage harvester needs no conversion — the only settings that matter are a chop length of 3–4 cm and a travel speed of up to 10 km/h.


Typical mistakes when establishing a miscanthus plantation

  • storing rhizomes outside the roughly 1 °C regime between lifting and planting;

  • late planting, when the topsoil has already dried out;

  • cutting corners on weed control in the first season;

  • establishing blind at an average rate, without soil analysis.


Frequently asked questions


How many years does a plantation work?

More than twenty years with no drop in productivity. The main investment falls on establishment, and subsequent care is moderate.


Are herbicides needed every year?

No. Weed control is critical in the first two seasons, until the sward closes over. After that the crop suppresses weeds itself.


How does miscanthus handle drought and flooding?

Drought tolerance is high. In our observations the rhizomes withstand two to three months in water, and plants that have lost their upper part in a drought resume growth after rain.
